Where It Starts

A mouse problem usually starts with access.

Seeing or hearing mice indoors means they were able to reach the inside of the structure somewhere. Finding that access is a large part of understanding why the activity is happening.

Access conditions vary from one property to the next. Depending on how a building was constructed, modified and maintained, mice may be using foundation gaps, utility penetrations, siding transitions, garage areas, crawlspace openings, roofline transitions or areas that have been damaged or weakened over time. How are mice getting into my house?
Usually through an opening or vulnerable area somewhere along the structure — commonly a foundation transition, a utility penetration, a door or garage transition, or a gap where materials meet. Which areas matter varies from property to property, which is why the structure is inspected rather than assumed.
Why do I hear mice in the walls at night?
Mice tend to be most active when a house is quiet, and wall voids connect levels of a structure. Sound carries well through framing, so activity heard in one wall may originate somewhere nearby.
Can mice live in attic insulation?
Attic insulation can be used for nesting and travel, and activity may show as disturbed, tunneled or matted material. Whether insulation work is appropriate depends on the condition of the space.
Why do mice keep coming back?
If access into the structure remains available, the building stays usable to mice. Recurring activity often points toward an entry condition that has not been identified or addressed.
Does removing mice solve the entry problem?

What is mouse exclusion?

Should I seal a hole if mice may still be inside?
